5 Manly Cold Weather Cocktails

Brown Derby

So Red the Nose is an odd little book in which famous writers of the day contributed their favorite drinks, all renamed after their latest books. Woollcott's When Rome Burns is essentially the Brown Derby, but with lemon juice instead of the lime and maple syrup instead of maple sugar, and with the key specification that you use Medford rum. It might not be tropical, but it sure is tasty
Recipe

Esky's Hot Spot

In 1935, a couple guys put together a silly little book by the name of So Red the Nose, or Breath in the Afternoon. They sent a questionnaire around to a bunch of then-famous writers, asking each of 'em to contribute a cocktail and a bit of blarney. This is what Arnold Gingrich, Esquire's founder coughed up. Not the drink you'd expect from an urbane sophisticate like Gingrich.
Recipe

Hot Buttered Rum

This particular compound is indicated for digitipedum glaciate, or, in the vulgate, "frozen tootsies," an affliction for which it is often administered prophylactically or preventively throughout the colder parts of the year — which, in New England, occupy roughly the months of August to June, give or take a month in either direction. Oh yeah, the purpose of the butter? Haven't a clue.
Recipe

Millionaire

Sweet, pleasant, even jovial. In fact, judging from actual millionaires we have met, rather atypical. (Just kidding, Donald — really.)

Brain-Duster

The combination of whiskey, Italian vermouth, and absinthe travels under several names. But it was ace bartender George J. Kappeler who peered deepest into the drink's essence when, back in 1895, he named it the Brain-Duster.

Suite 709

Suite 709 played their first public shows during SXSW 2010 with no recordings, press, or even band photos; yet, the band quickly received multiple accolades including “Top 10 New Bands of 2010″ from the Austin Chronicle Music Awards, “Top 35 Bands of 2011″ Do512.com, “Best Find at SXSW 2011″ from QRO Magazine, “Hot 100 Unsigned Bands of 2011″ from Music Connection Magazine, and most recently “Top 5 Soul/Blues Bands of 2011″ at the 2011 Austin Chronicle Music Awards alongside notable acts Gary Clark Jr. and Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. The group continues to sell out shows in their hometown of Austin, Texas, and has developed a strong national and international following through their innovative use of social media outlets. The band embodies the soul of DIY musicianship in everything from graphic design to marketing to engineering their own recordings. Reviewers repeat, “Words cannot describe a Suite 709 performance experience.” Every show is like a party from beginning to end.

Edison Chair

An energetic four piece rock band from Austin Texas, Edison
Chair honors the style of timeless rock such as The Who and The Beatles, while making innovative strides in the wake of popular modern bands such as The Fratellis and Oasis. Formed in 2007, the band quickly attracted attention from multi-platinum producers and major labels such as Interscope Records. With three part harmonies and songs you'll be singing long after the show, Edison Chair has developed a sound that will be hard to forget.

Tuesday Night North Austin Social Ride

Join North Austin Social Bicycling 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday for a spin around North Austin. We'll be going about 10 miles at a social pace, stopping for a break at a park, and ending at a great bar. We ride rain or shine with wheels down about 8 p.m.

WHERE AND WHEN: We meet at Balcones Community Park (http://austinparks.org/apfweb/park.php?parkId=202)
Get there around 7:30 p.m. for some social time. We take off around 8 p.m. We end the ride at a bar usually around 9:30 p.m. for snacks and drinks.

WHAT TO BRING: Helmet, lights, a good U-Lock, ID, some common sense, a basic knowledge of how to operate a bicycle, and cash if you plan to eat or drink during or after the ride.

Inspired by the way Social Cycling Austin conducts rides, we ride as traffic and not against it. We obey traffic signals/road signs, yield the right of way, let cars pass, and we do not block intersections. We strive to be courteous to both our fellow cyclists and vehicular traffic on the road. Please listen to the ride leaders who are volunteering to help lead the ride safely; they are some nice folks and have your best interest in mind.

Curious about the rules of the road? Check out this most awesome rules site here: http://bicycleaustin.info/laws/austin.html

REMINDER: The goal is to create a safe environment for all cyclists and reach the destination without injury. We cannot control, nor would we want to, every riders’ behavior. We strongly encourage personal responsibility on all rides; it is up to YOU to maintain safe conduct for yourself and those around you. If you choose to ride with us YOU accept the risks inherent in riding a bicycle in a large group of other cyclists of varying skill levels as well as being in close proximity to vehicular traffic.

FREE SHOW: Jealous Sound, DayTrader, The New Trust, The Sour Notes.

Presented by Bedsider.org: Friends + Diamond Rings

Free show. Doors @ 6:30 pm. Presented by Bedsider.org.

"Friends's music is a magpie mix. One moment it's indie-pop, the next it's mutant funk, then disco. It's like a homemade attempt to mimic a whole record collection – and from that DIY spirit comes something that sounds only of itself, even as the echoes of the past flit through the songs.

If we wanted to, we could make a really polished pop record, easily. But we like the sound of it being a little rougher, a little more organic, because that sounds like what we're doing naturally, Samantha Urbani, [the group's singer], says. None of our songs sound the same. We're not going for one particular musical aesthetic because we like so many things and we're capable of creating so many different things. So I like that you have this realisation of 'It's this! Oh no, it's this!', because it isn't one thing. The album's like a mixtape, you know? That's a cool way to explain it. It's like us saying: 'We like all these different things and they feel like they kind of fit together." - The Guardian

"Diamond Rings defies laws of time and space.Electro-pop maestro John O makes music that exists outside specific eras, distilling encyclopedic knowledge and passion into laser-like beams of emotional immediacy. Physical limits don't bother him much, either. True to his D.I.Y. background, he composes highly personal songs in a tiny bedroom studio in Toronto's West End, yet is increasingly concerned with Diamond Rings reaching the widest possible audience. But don't be confused by these twists and ripples. A degree in astrophysics isn't mandatory to appreciate Free Dimensional, the second Diamond Rings full-length. A good heart and working ears are all the tools required."

West Nile Virus season.

Travis County health officials say they’ve confirmed 17 cases of West Nile virus. One death was confirmed in Travis County two weeks ago. In Williamson County, at least two human cases of West Nile are under investigation this year. Previously only five cases had been reported since 2002.

Prevention
  • Dusk and Dawn: Try to stay indoors at dusk and dawn. That is the time when mosquitoes likely to carry the infection are most active.
  • Dress: Wear pants and long sleeves when you are outside.
  • DEET: Apply insect repellent that contains DEET. Read and follow label instructions. Spray both exposed skin and clothing with repellent.
  • Drain: Get rid of standing water in your yard and neighborhood. Old tires, flowerpots, clogged rain gutters, birdbaths and wading pools can be breeding sites for mosquitoes.
To report a mosquito problem,
call (512)978-0370

What Are the Symptoms of WNV?

  • Serious Symptoms in a Few People. About one in 150 people infected with WNV will develop severe illness. The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent.
  • Milder Symptoms in Some People. Up to 20 percent of the people who become infected have symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. Symptoms can last for as short as a few days, though even healthy people have become sick for several weeks.
  • No Symptoms in Most People. Approximately 80 percent of people (about 4 out of 5) who are infected with WNV will not show any symptoms at all.

How Does West Nile Virus Spread

Infected Mosquitoes. Most often, WNV is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread WNV to humans and other animals when they bite.

Transfusions, Transplants, and Mother-to-Child. In a very small number of cases, WNV also has been spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, breastfeeding and even during pregnancy from mother to baby.

Not through touching. WNV is not spread through casual contact such as touching or kissing a person with the virus.

5 MANLY Summer Cocktails

Okay. I'll admit it. I sometimes wish I could order one of those huge cocktails with little pieces of fruit in it.. But I don't. Whether it is because I'm scared what the bartender will think of me or whether I'm more scared of my dates opinion, I'm not sure. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has ever run into this dilemma so I put together a list of 5 manly cocktails you don't have to hang your head in shame over.

1. Gin and Juice

Why is it manly?: Snoop Dogg likes to drink this when there are bitches in his living room gettin’ it on until six o’clock in the morning, so that has to be worth something. Gin and juice was also the morning cocktail of soldiers and officers in WWII. That’s right, this is what you drank right before you killed a bunch of Nazis. You can’t say that about Malibu and pineapple.
Recipe: 2 1/2 ounces Gin.
1 oz. orange juice.
Equal parts mind on your money and money on your mind

2. Manhattan:

Why is it manly: For starters it has man in the title. Though you may say "it’s got a cherry, nothing with a cherry is manly." Well, nibble on this: It’s notorious for being the favorite drink of the Italian Mafia, who are notorious for killing people. I’m not saying killing somebody makes you a man, but it’s probably not the best idea to call someone who just threw someone off a bridge a "cherry drinking pansy."Recipe:*3/4 oz Sweet Vermouth
2 1/2 oz Rye whiskey dash Angostura bitters
1 Maraschino cherry

3. Tequila Sunrise

Why is it manly?:First off, it’s a breakfast cocktail. And secondly, "2 measures tequila" is short for, "as much tequila as your glass will hold." It may look a little fruity but it’s about as tropical as a back alley in Tijuana.
Recipe:
2 measures Tequila Orange juice
2 dashes Grenadine

4. Rusty Nail

Why is it manly?: I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but there’s something oddly macho about asking your girlfriend if she would like to sip on your Rusty Nail.
¾ oz. scotch
¼ oz. Drambuie
1 ounce Campari
Slice of orange

5. Negroni

Why is it manly?: A pink drink? Didn’t see that one coming, did you? The Negroni is one of the simplest, most classically straight-up cocktails around. Plus it’s all booze: You’re not going to find any of those wimpy mixers in this bitter Italian stallion.

Recipe:
1 ounce gin
1 ounce sweet vermouth
1 ounce Campari
Slice of orange

FunFunFunFest: Bob Mould

Robert Arthur “Bob” Mould (born October 16, 1960) is an American musician, principally known for his work as guitaristvocalist andsongwriter for alternative rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s.

Though Mould's sexual orientation was previously something of an open secret, he was outed in the early 1990s; he is now openly gay and in the movie "Bear Nation", self-identifies as a "Bear".

In April 2004, Mould was a co-organizer of the WEDRock benefit concert for Freedom to Marry. "WedRock" was a play on the word "wedlock". The event raised an estimated US$30,000. Mould also contributed the song "See a Little Light" to the 2006 album Wed-Rock: A Benefit for Freedom to Marry, an album to support in the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Product Review: Lighter Mate

If you have been going to concerts or festivals the last couple months, chances are you have probably seen, used or heard about Lighter Mate. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a couple people that work for the company and ended up getting my own Lighter Mate. One of the things I noticed right from the beginning was the awesome color schemes they had available and the ability to customize your own online at  http://www.lightermate.com/.

The Lighter Mate is not a huge breakthrough in lighter innovation nor is it particular fancy. But by combining a refillable lighter with a simple magnet, it helps solve the most pressing issues you would normally face with a lighter. The built in magnets and assorted accessories such as the key chain and necklace attachment, make locating your lighter much easier than it would be with a normal disposable lighter. The only "problem" I have with the built in magnet would be that if it is put in the same pocket as your phone it will stick to it and could cause some problems. Being that Lighter Mate is a refillable butane lighter also helps. as long as you have extra butane.

The Lighter Mate also comes with a small metal plate they call the Mate Plate . The Mate Plate was specifically  designed for all you cigarette smokers to put behind the cellophane so that your lighter holds to your pack. The included key ring is also a really nice feature, though I probably won't use it. I tested it out for a couple days and it has not come off my key chain accidentally at all. The case is a little scratched up, but that is to be expected with any painted metal surface after time. It still functions as if it was brand new though.

In conclusion. I love the lighter and have gotten plenty of compliments from people who have seen it. This lighter is not for everyone though. The Lighter Mate runs about $20 and if you lose lighters all the time or have friends who seem to wander off with your lighter, then you might want to look somewhere else. Though I guess after a couple refills you have more than gotten your monies worth. Let me know if you have a Lighter Mate and what you think about it in the comments section or contact me via twitter: @ATXFollowers.
